Excursion Mercer Arneburg/Stendal

24.09.2025 -

As part of the lecture “Sustainable Process Engineering for Renewable Resources and CO₂ in Chemical Production”, bachelor’s and master’s students of the Faculty of Process and Systems Engineering (FVST) went on an excursion to the Mercer pulp mill in Arneburg/Stendal. There, they experienced the renewable raw material wood up close – from the massive chipping machines that reduced entire tree trunks to chips within seconds and shook the ground beneath our feet, through the digesters and purification processes, all the way to the final product: paper.

At the site, we were shown how Mercer is already producing today in a sustainable, resource-efficient manner with high efficiency – supported by the largest biomass power plant in Europe, located in Saxony-Anhalt. All auxiliary materials are recovered, and all “waste materials” are utilized.

Nevertheless – new products require not only new ideas, but above all graduates.

Former FVST students from the degree programs in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, and Chemical and Energy Engineering, who are now employed at the plant, shared their experiences about starting their careers, the exciting and challenging nature of their daily work, their opportunities for professional development, and most importantly, how much they value having received an excellent education at FVST.

Within the framework of the SmartProSys research focus, Mercer is a cooperation partner.
